After tomato-vegetables, now it is the turn of pulses to become expensive, the acreage decreased rapidly

Pulses Price in India: In most parts of the country, tomato prices have reached Rs 150 per kg, while in Uttarakhand, tomato prices have reached Rs 250 per kg. Now, after tomatoes, the prices of onions and potatoes and prices of other vegetables have also skyrocketed.

After vegetables, pulses are also on the rise. Yes, now the prices of pulses may increase in the country. The reason for which is that the sowing of pulses in the country has decreased from 31 to 60 percent. Their prices are also ready to hit double hundred. The reason for this is that the price of pulses may increase continuously from the last few days.

It is being told that arhar and urad are produced in those states, where monsoon rains have occurred only 30 to 40 times. This is the reason why the concern about pulses has started. The next six months of the Reserve Bank’s drive to tame inflation are going to be very challenging. If the sowing is low then the production is low and due to the low production there is a need for supply in the market, then inflation will increase and then there will be an increase in the inflation rate, which reached a 25-month low in May. In such a situation, it is very important to think about the circumstances due to which the price of pulses has increased.

65% sowing not done

Despite the acceleration of monsoon rains in most parts of India, the area under kharif crops for the week ended Friday was about 8.6 percent higher than the same period last year. The area under kharif crops like rice, pulses like sorghum and urad, soybean has reduced significantly. But, with monsoon rains picking up strongly since the middle of last month, it is expected that the year-on-year difference in acreage for some major crops will narrow in the coming weeks.

Apart from this, if the sowing is done on time, the shortfall in sowing will be completed to a large extent. In total, cassava crops cover about 101 million hectares. Sowing in 35.34 million hectares (about 35 per cent) had been completed by Friday, so rains have become essential in the remaining weeks of July and August as well.

Production of pulses may be less

According to traders, for some crops like arhar or tuar, the market has started to accept the decline in yield and no reduction in prices. This may have an impact on efforts to keep food inflation low as arhar dal is one of the major pulses of daily consumption. Arhar area till Friday was about 60 per cent lower on annual basis at 0.6 million hectares, which was seen at 1.5 million hectares in the same period last year.

If we talk about urad dal, the area has been seen less by 31.43 percent compared to the same period last year. This year the area is 0.48 million hectares which was 0.7 million hectares last year. On the other hand, if we talk about rice, in the year 2022 it was 23.8 percent i.e. 7.1 million hectares, this year this area has been seen at 5.41 million hectares. Area under rice has decreased mainly in Punjab, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. In Punjab, a major rice producing state, sowing has been relatively good.

Will Arhar’s pulse hit a double century?

Now the biggest question is whether the prices of pulses will be affected? According to experts, if the shortfall in sowing is looked at in this way, then by the middle or the last week of August, pigeon racing can make a double century. Yes, pigeon can reach Rs 200 per kg. IIFL vice-president and agro commodities expert Anuj Gupta says that if the fall in sowing continues, the price of arhar may touch Rs 180-200, while the price of urad dal may touch Rs 130-150.

If we talk about the present time, according to the consumer department, the average price of tuar dal in the country has been seen at 132.63 rupees per kg, while in Delhi it is 148 rupees. Arhar dal is the most expensive in the country at Rs 163 in Vijayawada. On the other hand, the average price of urad dal is Rs 112.7 per kg. It is doing business at Rs 123 per kg in Delhi. Along with this, prices have crossed Rs 150 in Eta of UP as well.
