California Passes Caste Discrimination Bill: A bill banning caste discrimination is passed in California amid fierce opposition from Indian-American business and temple organizations. California also became the first US state to do so.

The California State Senate has approved a bill banning racial discrimination in the state. The Anti-Racism Act passed the state Senate by a 34-1 vote.

The law will become after the signature of the governor

The California State Senate has passed SB 403, an anti-caste bill introduced by Senator Ayesha Wahab. In the voting held in the House, 34 votes were cast in favor of the bill and only one vote was cast against the bill. Now the bill will be presented in the Legislative Assembly and then after the signature of the Governor, it will become a law.

Promoters of the bill, led by the nonprofit Equality Lab, said a similar bill is being introduced in the state House of Representatives before it can be sent to the governor to sign into law.

All people will get equal accommodation, benefits, facilities

Introduced by Senator Ayesha Wahab of California, the SB 403 bill adds race as a protected category to an existing law, the URUH Civil Rights Act, which provides that all people in the state of California have full and equal housing, benefits, facilities are entitled to

SB 403 provides clear protections to those who have been systematically harmed by racial bias and prejudice. It also provides legal consequences for those who seek to avoid responsibility or influence for participating in or permitting caste discrimination and caste-based violence.

California became the first such state

After the anti-racism bill was passed in the US Senate, California has become the first state in America where discrimination on the basis of caste has been declared illegal. Now if someone commits racism in California they will have to pay a heavy price.

Seattle Council Member Kshama Sawant, who was instrumental in making Seattle the first city to pass anti-racism legislation, welcomed the passage of SB 403 by the California State Senate.
