The bodies of 64 people have been recovered in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby police said on Monday, before local authorities reported ongoing fighting between rival tribes. Giving information in this regard, Assistant Commissioner of Police Samson Kua said that the bodies were found after the fatal attack on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred near the town of Wabag, 600 km (370 mi) northwest of the capital Port Moresby. This incident is being linked to the conflict between Sikin, Ambulin and Kekin tribes. Highland tribes have fought each other in Papua New Guinea for centuries, but the arrival of automatic weapons has made clashes more deadly and fueled a cycle of violence.

According to media reports, the gunmen used real weapons including SLR, AK-47, M4, AR15 and M16 rifles, as well as pump-action shotguns and homemade weapons. The government of Papua New Guinea has tried repression, mediation, amnesty and other strategies to control the violence, with little success. The military has deployed around 100 troops in the region, but their influence has been limited and security services are understaffed.
