Vidyadhar Pundalik’s book Charvak says that Charvakists used to organize Chandrotsav festival in a particular season of the year. Preparations were done for this. It was celebrated as Pranay Utsav i.e. the festival of love and fun. Young men and women used to dance together throughout the night. Used to woo each other. Charvak believed that every moment of life should be fully enjoyed. That’s why he was also called the father of Art of Joyful Living.

The courtiers, big officials and religious leaders of the state used to get very angry on this. Not only the complaints of Charvak were made to the emperor Veersen of Anvati, but during Chandrotsav, attacks on Charvakists i.e. Lokayats also started. His opponents used to watch Chandrotsav secretly. After secretly watching this festival, many Buddhist monks left the Sangha and immediately took refuge in Charvak.

The Charvakas were probably the first sages in the world who openly challenged the Vedas, the Vedic sages and the Vedic rituals. He was an atheist. So live a life free from frustrations and worries.
When did Charvak happen?
The sutras of Charvaka are also known as the sutras of Brihaspati. The Charvakas happened after the Vedas, but in their time Jainism and Buddhism had gained strength. Swami Dayanand Saraswati also quoted many of his verses in his book Satyarth Prakash. Many scholars say that the Charvakas came first. Brihaspati was another philosopher who made him popular, who believed in the Charvaka sect.
Madnotsav was also held
There is also a mention in the literature about celebrating Madanotsav in spring with the god of love, Kamadeva or Madan. Kalidas has specifically mentioned this in Ritu Sanhar. ‘Suvasantak’ and ‘Madnotsav’ have been mentioned the most in ancient texts. Earlier Madanotsav was celebrated for a month on the occasion of spring across the country. Then gradually it disappeared in the country. Although Shanti Niketan still organizes Dolotsav on the occasion of spring.
It is mentioned in Kalidas’s ‘Ritu Sanhar’ that as soon as spring comes, the ladies take off their warm clothes. She wears a sheet colored with red color or kumkum. Black Guru or turmeric wears a yellow saree. In ‘Dashkumarcharit’, this festival has been called Kam Mahotsav.

Mentioning the Kaamdevonuman festival in the Sanskrit play Charudatta, it has been said that a procession of Kaamdev used to take place on this occasion. In the play Mrichhakatikam, it is said that the Basant Sena also takes part in such processions. It has been said in the Bhavishya Purana that in the spring, the idols of Kamadeva and Rati were established and worshiped together. Ratnavali mentions Madanotsav in detail, it is said in Kuttanimat that prostitutes and courtesans used to celebrate Madanotsav with fun.
