Bureau Report: Nowadays, a new method of cyber fraud has emerged which is not easy to catch. A new method of robbery has been found with fear and dread. This scam is linked to the e-challan of the transport department. This scammer is carrying out the scam by sending a link of the department to people through a tax message on the phone. The police and the Ministry of Electronics and Information (MEITy) have issued a precautionary alert regarding this. In its X post, MEITy wrote ‘Don’t get fooled by fake e-challan scam, your security is our responsibility’.
What is e-challan scam, how does it work?
To carry out this scam, the scammer sends an e-challan message on his phone. Which looks the same as the original website of the Department of Transport. The message contains a payment link. As soon as you click on this link, fraudsters scan your secret debit or credit card information.
How to avoid this scam?
In this scam, the tax message that comes to your phone, the link given in it appears like the transport department but it is not. According to the police, scammers share https://echallan.parivahan.in/ link. While the link to the website of the transport department is https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in/. The thing to note here is that the link issued by the government has “gov.in” at the end. So no mistake should be made in its identification.
Challan alert does not come on the phone number
If your challan has been cut then the alert does not come on any phone number. Apart from this, it is also important not to make a hasty payment on any link. According to the cyber police officer, before clicking on such a link, the owner of the vehicle should check all the details himself. In the correct message, the details of your vehicle like engine number, chassis number are also given. While the scammer’s message does not contain such details. Apart from this, you can go to the website of the department and check whether there is any fine on you.
What to do if you are a victim of fraud?
If you fall victim to a scam, call the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCCRP) helpline number 1930 without wasting time and report the fraud, along with this, immediately file a complaint on the Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Apart from this, file a complaint in case of fraud in your bank and nearest police station.
