The World Health Organization and health experts around the world are concerned about salt intake. Not only in India, but in every country in the world where restaurants, bakeries and apps are serving delicious and processed food, people are consuming twice as much salt as required. If there is no reduction in the daily use of salt, a large number of people will die in the next two years due to hypertension and heart diseases. These days (14 – 20 March) we are celebrating Salt Awareness Week i.e. World Salt Awareness Week. So let’s know some important facts about salt from an expert for our health.

The changed lifestyle has affected the food habits the most. Excessive salt is being added to restaurant deep fried and packaged processed food. Which enhances the taste of food, but proves to be a slow poison for your health. The result is that one day the doctor suggests you to give up salt altogether.

The chemical name of salt is sodium chloride (NaCl). It is used in food as seasoning and condiment. Salt is very important for the human body, but should it be used in limited quantities?

Its less and more quantity both harm the health. Prachi Jain is giving some more important information about salt on World Salt Awareness Week. Prachi is the Chief Clinical Nutritionist & HOD (Nutrition & Dietetics) at CK Birla Hospital Gurugram.

Eat less salt

As per standard guidelines, a healthy person should consume only 4-5 grams of salt i.e. 1 teaspoon (teaspoon) per day.

Patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases, hypertension (high BP) and kidney diseases are advised to consume low-salt diet. Means 2-3 grams of salt / day / person.

2 Preserved food contains more salt

Dietician Prachi says, “In today’s modern times, when people are leading a very busy life and eating habits are also becoming unhealthy, we have started consuming more salt than we need knowingly or unknowingly. In fact, we are consuming twice the recommended amount of salt. Now we often take packaged, preserved, packaged, bakery and ready-to-eat food.

This is the main reason why this type of unhealthy food has become a part of our lifestyle. Preference for outside food, less time, easy availability in markets, easy access through online food apps, and also, lack of awareness about food and ill effects of wrong choice.

Too much salt increases blood pressure and heart disease

Member countries of the World Health Organization have agreed to reduce the amount of salt consumed among the world’s population by 30% by 2025.

Also, the World Health Organization says – reducing salt intake to the above amount worldwide can prevent about 2.5 million deaths.

If you consume packaged food occasionally, read the information and nutritional information on them. Sodium glutamate, which is sometimes used as a food additive in packaged foods, may also contain sodium.

Dash diet (DASH) i.e. Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension will also have to be taken care of:

  1. Consume more of whole grains, whole pulses, fish, poultry, dry fruits and seeds.
  2. Try to eat seasonal fruits, vegetables and low fat dairy products.
  3. Cut down on foods high in saturated fat, cholesterol and trans fats.
  4. reduce sodium, sweets, sweetened beverages, and red meat and marinated foods
  5. Avoid consuming bakery and refined food and foods made from fine flour.
  6. Reduce the amount of canned, packaged, preserved, processed and ready-to-eat foods in your diet.
