New Delhi: Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) leader Kavita has announced a one-day fast in the national capital on Friday, demanding passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill. Addressing the media, Kavitha, daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, said the bill has been lying in cold storage since 2010 and it is a historic opportunity for the Modi government to get it passed by Parliament before 2024.

He told that the non-governmental organization (NGO) ‘Bharat Jagriti’ will organize the fast. Kavita has invited all the parties to participate in it. So far 18 parties, including Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and Shiv Sena have confirmed their participation. Kavita told, “Around 500 to 600 people will sit on the fast, but the presence of people will be much more than this. More than six thousand people and 18 political parties have confirmed their participation.

He informed that CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury will inaugurate the program at 10 am. Significantly, the Women’s Reservation Bill has a provision to reserve 33 percent seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha in May 2008, from where it was referred to a Standing Committee. In the year 2010, the Rajya Sabha approved the bill and it was sent for the approval of the Lok Sabha. However, the bill lapsed due to the dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha.

Kavita said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised in the 2014 and 2019 general elections that his government would bring this bill and it is also included in the election manifesto of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He said no BJP leader raised the issue and despite having a majority, the Modi government failed to get the bill passed by Parliament, “which is a very sad issue”. Kavita said that India ranks 148 out of 193 countries in terms of representation of women. He said that there are only 78 women members out of 543 in the Parliament, which is only 14.4 per cent.
