ISRO on Friday shared the first video of the six-wheeled, 26-kilogram Pragyan rover coming off the Chandrayaan-3 lander. It has started moving to the moon’s surface since Thursday.

About 14 hours after Chandrayaan-3’s lander landed on Thursday morning, ISRO confirmed the exit of the rover. The Chandrayaan-3 lander landed on the moon at 6.4 pm on August 23.

The rover first opened its solar panels upon landing on the lunar surface. It moves at a speed of 1 cm/s and is using navigation cameras to scan its surroundings. The rover will travel half a kilometer around the lander in 12 days.

Imprint of Ashoka pillar and ISRO logo on lunar soil
The back two wheels of the Pragyan rover bear the Ashoka Pillar symbol and the ISRO logo, the national symbol of India. As the rover landed on the moon, its wheels left imprints of these symbols on the lunar soil. The rover also has two payloads that will search for water and other precious metals.

Confusion over the images taken from the orbiter of Chandrayaan-2
Earlier, ISRO had shared pictures of the Chandrayaan-3 lander from the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter. ISRO shared a photo of it on its X handle on Friday, but later deleted it. In it, the Vikram lander is seen on the surface of the moon.

These images were taken from the Orbiter’s High-Resolution Camera (OHRC). It is the highest resolution camera in lunar orbit. NASA’s orbiter is also in lunar orbit, its camera is also not that powerful.
