43 percent of the children are unable to read the text till the eighth

According to the information of UNICEF India, according to the National Assessment Survey conducted in November 2021, more than 30 percent of the children in grade 3 in Maharashtra are unable to read the text of the books included in the small syllabus properly. If children are assessed up to grade 5, that number rises to 41 percent who cannot read a text appropriate for their grade level, and to 43 percent in grade 8.

The campaign started in 2020

According to a UNICEF report, in the year 2020, this campaign was started by the Education Department of Maharashtra in partnership with UNICEF and Pratham Books. At that time it was named ‘Reading Campaign’ or ‘Goshtiche Shaniwar or Reading Saturday’. Provides children with a story book each week to promote their emotional reading as well as support their language proficiency. Under the campaign, one story each in Marathi, Urdu and English is being shared with students of classes 1-8 on every Saturday. Children from all 36 district schools of Maharashtra are being promoted under the campaign and over 1 lakh schools have reached 2.6 lakh teachers and 31 lakh children.
