Tripura Election Result: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Tripura unit chief Subrata Chakraborty has said that we have accepted all the demands of Tipra Motha except ‘Greater Tipraland’. In fact, Tipra Motha, the new party formed by royal scion Pradyot Manikya Debbarma in Tripura, may play an important role in the formation of the next government in the state.

Tipra Motha will play the role of kingmaker in Tripura

Tipra Motha is leading in 12 of the 20 seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes, leading the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) alliance and the opposition Congress-Left alliance as the counting of votes for the Tripura assembly elections continues. The water seems to be turning on the possibilities of victory. According to the latest trends, the BJP-IPFT alliance is ahead in 30 seats. Thus, he is just one seat away from the magic figure of majority. At the same time, according to the trends, the opposition Congress-Left alliance has a lead in 17 seats.

Tipra Motha succeeded in making a big dent in BJP’s vote bank

The trends indicate that Tipra Motha has been able to make a big dent in the BJP’s vote bank in the tribal areas of the state. In the 2018 assembly elections in Tripura, the BJP won 10 seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes, while its ally IPFT won 8 seats. The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) won the two seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes. And this time, Tipra Motha has been able to replace the IPFT as the dominant tribal party, as Debbarma’s promise of establishing a ‘Greater Tipraland’ has won it wide support among a large section of the tribal electorate.

Last time the BJP-IPFT alliance had won

The BJP’s alliance with the IPFT was cited as one of the key factors that ousted the Left Front government in the 2018 elections. Debbarma cashed in on his royal heritage to systematically make inroads into tribal areas after the IPFT failed to fulfill the promise of establishing Tipraland made ahead of the 2018 elections. Gradually he managed to portray himself as the protector of the tribals, who started calling him Bubagara (king). Due to this, the popularity of IPFT started declining drastically in tribal dominated areas.

CPI(M)’s mass base weakened due to Tipra Motha

Debbarma’s Tipra Motha succeeded in reducing the IPFT to zero in the April 2022 elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), just three months after its formation. The mass base of the CPI (M), which was once dominant in the hills, has also weakened due to Tipra Motha. Tipra Motha had won 18 seats in the TTAADC elections, while the BJP had to settle for 10 seats. Despite several attempts at friendship, neither the ruling BJP nor the opposition CPI(M) was able to forge an alliance with Tipra Motha for the assembly elections.
