Transgenders will also now be able to participate in the constable recruitment process of Chandigarh Police. This decision was given by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on a petition filed by a transgender to participate in the recruitment process. The High Court has directed the Chandigarh Police to grant interim relief to the petitioner and to apply to him as a transgender.

Petitioner Sourav alias Kittu Tank told the High Court that he had seen an advertisement for the recruitment of Constable posts in Chandigarh Police on 20 May 2023. Like other aspirants, he also wanted to apply, but while filling the form found that there was no transgender column in it.

Thereafter, on 2nd June 2023, the petitioner sent a demand letter to the Home Secretary of Chandigarh Administration and DGP Chandigarh for permission to fill the form under Transgender, but he did not get any response from Chandigarh Police. After pursuing this matter several times, he approached the High Court. The petitioner stated that he is fully qualified and wants to join this recruitment. Despite this, he is not being given a chance. Along with this, the petition has also challenged this advertisement, which has no alternative to apply as a transgender.

The High Court heard this petition on June 21. A bench of Justice Vikram Aggarwal, after examining the documents submitted and the case, found that the petitioner is fully qualified for the selection process for the recruitment of constables in the Chandigarh Police.

While giving interim relief to the petitioner, they have issued notices to the Home Secretary of Chandigarh and others and ordered them to file a reply for not having a transgender column in the form. Along with this, the Chandigarh Police has been directed to accept the application form of the petitioner as a transgender before the last date fixed by the Chandigarh Police.
