GPS Based Toll System: Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said the government will introduce new technologies including GPS based toll collection system in the next 6 months to replace existing highway toll plazas in the country. Gadkari said the move is aimed at decongesting traffic and charging motorists for a fixed distance on the highway.

Addressing an event organized by industry body CII, Gadkari further said that state-owned NHAI’s toll income is currently Rs 40,000 crore and it is going to reach Rs 1.40 lakh crore in 2-3 years.

“The government is considering new technologies including GPS based toll system to replace the toll plazas in the country… We will bring the new technology in six months,” he said.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is running a pilot project of automatic number plate reader cameras to enable automatic toll collection without stopping vehicles.

How long does an average person stay at a toll plaza?

The average waiting time for vehicles at toll plazas during 2018-19 was 8 minutes. With the introduction of FASTag during 2020-21 and 2021-22, the average waiting time for vehicles has come down to 47 seconds.

Although waiting times have improved significantly in some places, especially near cities, there are still some delays at toll plazas during peak hours in densely populated cities. The Road Transport and Highways Minister stressed the need to reduce construction costs without compromising on quality.
