West Bengal: Keeping in mind the upcoming panchayat elections in West Bengal, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has decided to move two resolutions in the assembly, one against attempts to divide West Bengal, while the other seeks recognition of the Sarna religion of tribals. North Bengal should be made a union territory
North Bengal, with eight districts including picturesque Darjeeling, is economically important to the state because of its wealth-generating tea, timber and tourism industries. The location is strategically important for the Siliguri Corridor, commonly known as the ‘Chicken Neck’, as it connects the mainland with the North Eastern states. In the last few years, several BJP MPs, including Alipurduar MP John Barla, have demanded that North Bengal be made a Union Territory.
Objective to expose the intention of BJP
According to TMC sources, the purpose of the motion is to expose the intention of the BJP. A TMC MLA said- Some BJP leaders have openly demanded that North Bengal be made a separate state, but the party leadership has kept silence on this issue. Reacting to TMC’s decision, BJP chief whip Manoj Tigga said the party will discuss the resolution during the legislators’ meeting and decide on its participation in the assembly debate. To reach out to politically important tribals in Purulia, Bankura, Paschim Medinipur and parts of North Bengal, the TMC has also decided to bring a resolution to recognize Sarna Dharma.
