The meeting between Haryana and Punjab Chief Ministers and officials on the Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal (SYL) dispute was inconclusive. Both the states stuck to their old stand in the meeting which lasted for more than 1 hour. After the conclusion of the meeting, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that we are sticking to our old stand. We have no extra water to spare. Along with this, we do not object to giving water from Yamuna to Haryana.

CM Bhagwant Mann said that Sutlej is no longer a river but a drain. 70 percent area of Punjab has gone into dark zone. The water has gone deep. In such a case, motors with extra capacity have to be used. He gave an example that the same capacity motor is used to extract ground water in Punjab, same capacity is used to extract oil in Dubai.

CM Mann said that efforts are being made to save the groundwater of Punjab. Old drains and water bodies are being maintained. New dams are being built. So that we can fulfill our needs, while Haryana has not been able to do so.

The Chief Minister said that Punjab needs 52 MF of water. But the state has 14 and a half MF. is left In such a situation we cannot give water. He said that in such a situation there is no benefit in building a canal in Punjab. We will present our case in the hearing on January 4.
