The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to grant relief to Asaram Bapu in the case of life imprisonment. In fact, a petition was filed in the court to suspend the sentence of Asaram Bapu, who is serving a life sentence in a rape case, which the court refused to consider.

The court refused to consider
A bench of Justice Sanjeev Khanna and Justice SVN Bhatti told petitioner’s counsel Devdutt Kamat that the court would not consider it. The bench said that you (lawyer) should be prepared to argue in the High Court against the life sentence. Let us tell you that the Jodhpur trial court sentenced Asaram Bapu to life imprisonment on 25 April 2018.

The petitioner’s counsel said that Asaram Bapu has been in jail for nearly 10 years and the High Court has refused to consider his ill health.

The lawyer withdrew the appeal
The bench said that you should be prepared for the regular hearing which is going to appear before the High Court. The bench also said that it was ready to dismiss the appeal filed by Kamat. On this, Kamat requested the court not to reject it. Kamat said that he is ready to withdraw his appeal. The bench then allowed the appeal to be withdrawn.

Earlier also the petition was rejected
Earlier on 31 August 2021, the Supreme Court refused to consider Asaram’s petition. The petition sought suspension of Asaram Bapu’s sentence for a few months to enable him to undergo treatment, which was rejected by the Supreme Court.

Let us tell you that Asaram Bapu was found guilty by the Jodhpur Special Court (POCSO) in several cases of sexual abuse including rape. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment. Asaram Bapu was arrested in 2013 for raping a teenage girl at his ashram.
