Chandigarh: Amid heated politics in Punjab over the arrest of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira from Bhulath in the 2015 NDPS case, Governor Banwari Lal Purohit has written to DGP Gaurav Yadav seeking information about Khaira’s arrest.

After the Punjab Police arrested Sukhpal Khaira from his house in Chandigarh three days ago, the government constituted an SIT to investigate his links with drug trafficking. Against the arrest of Khaira, a delegation of senior leaders of the Punjab Congress met the Governor and requested the Governor to intervene in the matter, terming Khaira’s arrest as political vendetta.

On behalf of the Congress, the governor was told that Khaira was wrongly arrested by the Punjab Police from his residence in Chandigarh and the Supreme Court also granted relief to Khaira in an earlier case in which he was arrested.

In this regard, the Governor has now written to the DGP of Punjab and asked him to give complete information about the matter including the status report of the action taken by the SIT so far. Khaira was arrested from Chandigarh and taken to Jalalabad by the Punjab Police team, where he was produced in the court and taken on police remand for two days.

After the remand period ended on Saturday, the court sent Khaira to Sri Muktsar Sahib Jail in judicial custody for 14 days. After staying in Mr. Muktsar Sahib’s jail for about an hour and a half, the jail administration transferred him to Nabha jail for security reasons.
