In the first week of September 1978, it was raining heavily. The water level of Yamuna river has reached a height of 207.49 meters. Hathinikund barrage in Haryana’s Yamunanagar district, 227 km from Delhi, has reached the overflow level. After this, on September 6 at 9 am, more than 7 lakh cusecs of water was released from Hathinikund barrage.

Yamuna reached above the danger mark in no time. The Delhi government has issued an alert regarding the flood in the areas adjacent to the Yamuna. Queues of people formed at medicine and ration shops. Everyone started collecting essential items like medicine, ration, matches.

On the other hand, 77-year-old Bhaskar Nand Dimri, a resident of Delhi’s Model Town, says that on the night of September 6, there was an atmosphere of fear and complacency in his colony. The water level of Yamuna was rising every hour. At around 1 am, a loud sound of water started coming from the sewage of the streets of Model Town. After the next hour, the ground floor was completely submerged in water. The sounds of people shouting were coming from all sides.

Recalling this flood, Lal Bihari Tiwari, former Member of Parliament from the North-East District, said in an interview that in 1978, his entire family was trapped in this flood. The situation was that the area across the Yamuna from New Delhi to Delhi was completely cut off.

Yamuna was at its peak. People were not coming out of their houses. When he felt hungry, he had to drink flood water to appease him. People saved their lives by making a bike tire tube into a boat.

This year flood water entered 30 villages of Delhi like Burari, Mohammadpur, Hiranki, Fatehpur, Sungarpur, Palla, Tigipur, Bhaktawarpur, Majra, Hiranki. 40,000 square kilometers of Delhi’s arable land was submerged up to 2 meters in water. 18 people died in this flood. The Delhi government had then spoken of the loss of property worth more than 10 crores due to this flood.
