A few days before the arrival of AAP National President and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in Chandigarh, the main opposition party in the Municipal Corporation has suffered a setback. As soon as the date of the election of the mayor was announced, the period of commotion in the politics of Chandigarh started.

Bharatiya Janata Party has included Ward No-31 Councilor Lakhbir Singh Billu in its camp. Lakhbir Singh joined the ruling party in the presence of MP Kiran Kher, state president Jitinderpal Malhotra and former president Sanjay Tandon at the party office Kamalam in Sector-33. Now the mayor's election has become even more exciting.

After Lakhbir Singh joined the BJP, AAP now has only 12 councilors, while the BJP strengthened its claim for the mayoral election with the votes of 15 councilors and one MP. If we talk about Congress, they have votes of only 7 councillors, while one vote belongs to Shiromani Akali Dal councillor.

In such a situation, the Congress will form an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party or field a separate candidate with the hope of cross votes. At the same time, some senior leaders of the BJP are claiming that some other opposition councilors may also leave their party and join them in the coming days.

Elections of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held on January 18. Before this, nominations can be submitted till January 13. Deputy Commissioner Vinay Pratap Singh has issued a notification in this regard.

According to this notification, the election of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held on January 18 at 11 am in the Assembly Hall of Municipal Corporation. Hence Anil Masih has been made the Presiding Authority. Nominations can be submitted till January 13 at 5 pm.

If Congress also fields candidates for mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, it will be the first time that candidates from three different parties will contest for the election of the mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. There was only one occasion before this, when voting was held between three candidates for the election of Mayor.

However, at that time two candidates were from BJP, while one was from Congress. In the 1998 mayoral election, BJP candidate Keval Krishna and Congress candidate Kamlesh defeated another BJP candidate Rajinder Kumar. If there is no alliance between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, for the first time candidates from three different parties will contest the mayoral election.
