The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) took exception to an op-ed titled โ€œIndia’s Kannada Problemโ€ by Tawaleen Singh published in The Sunday Express, dated September 24, 2023. The SGPC raised several objections to the article, which mainly revolved around two โ€“ the first about Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji and the second about Khalistani supporter Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

The SGPC claimed that Tawleen’s op-ed misrepresented Sikhism. The SGPC’s first issue was the claim that Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji had founded the Khalsa to resist the oppression of the Mughal emperor, and that he was a ‘Hindu’.

Apart from this, SGPC has also objected to the character of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. The Shiromani Committee argues that Bhindranwale’s struggle mainly focused on Punjab’s political, economic and water-related issues. They argue that such characterizations of Bhindranwale are inconsistent with available historical facts and references.

SGPC demanded an apology

Not only this, the SGPC asked Singh to apologize and claimed that his op-ed was a misguided piece and portrayed the Sikh community in a negative light. He asked the newspaper to publish the correct facts in his newspaper as a rebuttal to the “misrepresentation” made by Tawleen in his article.

SGPC rejected the claim

Rejecting the SGPC’s claim that Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji did not establish the Khalsa to save Hindus, Sikh history expert Puneet Sahni said that what Tawaleen Singh said was true. He cites Guru Gobind Singh’s work Ugardanti, which apparently pleads with Durga to help his army destroy the Turkic and Mughal armies and revive the Vedas and religion of the Hindus. The Punjabi version of Ugardanti can be seen here. For those who are unaware, Ugardanti is a work that is part of the Dasam Granth, one of the holy scriptures of Sikhism

Tawleen’s reply to SGPC

On the other hand, replying to the SGPC, Tawaleen wrote, โ€œMay I suggest that the SGPC read some books on Sikh history.

Also, they have presented many facts about Bhindravale.
