Bureau Report: The court has sentenced the accused who committed blasphemy in Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib to 5 years. Paramjit, a resident of Ludhiana, was caught smoking a cigarette inside the Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib where the light is placed. On 13 September 2021, at 4:30 in the morning, Paramjit lit a cigarette and put the smoke in his mouth and threw the cigarette behind Ragi Singh. After this act of his, the security personnel of SGPC dragged him and handed him over to the police.
However, Paramjit’s family claimed that he was undergoing mental treatment for the past one year. Therefore, he did not have the power to think and understand. The police had registered a case under Section 295A of the IPC against Paramjit.
On 17 May 2022, Judge Harpreet Kaur Jeevan framed charges against Paramjit under sections 295A, 436 and 511 IPC. In which it was said that half of the cigarette was deliberately lit and smoked and then the cigarette was thrown behind Ragi Singh. With which there was a risk of huge loss.
The court has sentenced Paramjit to 5 years imprisonment under Section 435 IPC while Section 295A IPC. Sentenced to 2 years under Both sentences will run concurrently. Apart from this, a fine of 5 thousand has also been imposed. However, Paramjit has been acquitted of Section 436 and 511 IPC.
Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, president of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, has welcomed the punishment of the accused, but he also said that the five-year sentence awarded by the court is insufficient. Advocate Dhami said that governments should ensure strict and exemplary punishment in cases of insulting religious sentiments and blasphemy. He said that cases related to blasphemy should be established and tried without delay by setting up fast-track courts to ensure exemplary punishment to the accused.
