The number of workers in Switzerland holding a cross-border commuter permit known as a G permit, surged by 6.1 per cent for a period between the fourth quarter of 2021 and 2022, to a total of 380,000 people.

Their share in the employment-population was 7.3 per cent, according to the figures provided by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO), SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Switzerlandโ€™s work permit dedicated to cross-border workers, known as the G permit, allows persons living in a European Union or European Free Trade Association state to work in Switzerland. The permit is valid for a period of five years for a permanent work contract or a temporary contract of over one year, or the duration of the temporary contract below one year.

In order to apply for a G permit, applicants must address their requests to the foreign services in the canton in which they plan to work.

Authorities in Switzerland have made ongoing efforts to ease the travel process for cross-border commuters.

Last year, The State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) said it would enhance the online desk provided by authorities to companies, EasyGov.swiss.

The Swiss government through a statement noted that since May 24, several services were activated.

The new changes included the possibility to process cross-border commuter permits for European Union and European Free Trade Association nationals with the pilot cantons of Thurgau and Zurich.

It was also confirmed that the supervision of the Federal Supervisory for Foundations will permit to submission of transactions such as annual reports through the EasyGov system.

The statement said that employers planning to employ or deploy international workers in Switzerland are urged to notify the authorities or hold a work permit, stressing that EasyGov backs companies in preparing these requests or notifications and sends the documents to the competent authorities.

The plan also was introduced in order to allow further categories of work permits to be processed in an electronic way in successive stages, during the next few years.

The registration procedure for employing provisionally admitted people, as well as recognized refugees, was made eligible in 25 cantons in August 2021.

โ€œCross-border commuter permits are expected to follow at the end of this year or in the course of 2023 for further pilot cantons, namely Aargau, Basel-Stadt and St. Gallen. This will be followed by permits for workers from third countries and posted workers (service providers from the EU/EFTA and third countries),โ€ the statement revealed.

The Swiss government is also attempting to facilitate the registration as well as authorisation process in a total of 26 cantons.
