The Swedish authorities have announced that the country’s government has decided to tighten the conditions for labour immigration and promote highly qualified labour immigration instead.
The decision to make such changes was made by the Ministry of Labour of Sweden, which said that supplementary directives on needs-tested immigration have already been decided by the government, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
“The government has decided on supplementary directives to the Inquiry into needs-tested labour immigration. The aim is partly to tighten the conditions for labour immigration, and partly to promote highly qualified labour immigration,” the statement of the Ministry reads.
This means, that the Swedish authorities want to promote labour immigration based on the needs that the country has, giving priority to qualified workers.
Commenting on the matter, the Minister of Migration of Sweden, Maria Malmer Stenergard, said that the country must improve its rules for qualified workers. The same stressed that it is important that Sweden also fights crime linked to labour immigration.
“Sweden must protect and improve the rules for qualified and highly qualified labour immigration. For both serious companies and employees, it is important that crime and fraud linked to labour immigration be fought with full force,” Minister Stenergard stated.
The Swedish government decided on a committee directive on needs-tested labour immigration back on June 2022. In line with this decision, the relevant authorities were required, among other things, to analyse how a new and effective system for needs-based labour immigration can be designed.
Moreover, the authorities were also required to make an analysis of the categories of foreign labour that should be covered by the new system and the exemptions that may be introduced.
Nonetheless, now that the government has decided to tighten some of its rules the relevant authorities are no longer required to carry out such analyses. Instead, they are required to give proposals regarding the measures that can be introduced to tighten the conditions for labour immigration.
In addition, the relevant authorities are also now required to propose measures that would promote labour immigration to Sweden of highly qualified workers.
The government’s decision to make such changes was supported by the Swedish Labour Market Minister, Johan Pehrson, who said that the country is dealing with a major skills shortage. According to Minister Pehrson, many companies in Sweden need highly qualified workers.
The migration policy spokesperson for the Sweden Democrats, Ludvig Aspling, also commented on the matter. Aspling said that this is one of the most important changes in labour immigration and, at the same time, pointed out that Sweden should not allow low-wage completion in professions that require little to no education.
