The data provided by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of Spain has revealed that in January of this year Social Security affiliates related to tourist activities increased by 7.4 per cent, reaching 2,404,387 workers compared to the same period of the year before.
Such data also show that tourism workers make up 12 per cent of the total number of affiliates in all activities of the Spanish economy, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
“The data are extraordinary on the path of the magnificent behaviour of tourism employment throughout the past year. For the head of tourism, the membership figures begin to confirm our good forecasts for this 2023, the year of the total recovery of tourism in Spain,” Commerce and Tourism Minister Reyes Maroto pointed out in this regard.
According to the data, in absolute terms, this year the increase was 165,373 workers compared to January 2022.
As for the hotel industry, there were 98,954 affiliates, while in the tourist agencies and tourist operators, it reached 5,391. At the same time, there was an increase in other parts of tourism activities, with 61,028 workers.
In addition, in the social security system, the increase particularly affected salaried workers, who represent 79.9 per cent of the total number of employees in the sector. Thus, its growth was 9.4 per cent compared to 0.2 per cent for self-employment, which occupies the remaining 20.1 per cent.
The above data also reveal that in January of this year, there was an increase in subsidiaries in autonomous communities such as Andalusia, Catalonia, the Canary Islands, the Community of Madrid and the Community of Valencia.
The annual increase is mostly observed in the Canary Islands with 12.8 per cent and the Balearic Islands with 9.7 per cent.
Moreover, data from the Spanish national tourism body Turespana revealed that in November last year a total of 2,485,897 foreign members of Spain’s Social Security were registered.
The same source has shown that compared to October 2022, 23,788 more foreign workers employed in the tourism sector were registered in November.
On the other hand, the Turespana data show that compared to the figures of February 2020, the Spanish Social Security registered 296,000 workers more than other countries. The same authority also said that last year’s November figures represent 12.2 per cent of all Social Security members in seasonally adjusted terms.
