South Korea Danuri orbiter sends first photo of far side of the Moon

According to the Science Ministry there, South Korea’s unmanned spacecraft Danuri has sent the first picture of the far side of the Moon during its mission to collect selenographic data. The far side of the Moon is the hemisphere that always faces away from Earth. The Danuri spacecraft is orbiting 100 km above the Moon’s surface. On March 22 and 24, the orbiter took pictures of 3 craters of the Moon with the help of its HD cameras.

Yonhap news agency Report According to, the South Korean spacecraft has taken the picture of the far side of the Moon for the first time. Instruments such as the Wide-angle Polarimetric Camera, PolCam for short, mounted on the Danuri spacecraft are designed to study the lunar surface composition and its volcanism.

South Korea has also connected this mission with the common people. By visiting the orbiter’s website, people can know what is the real time location of Danuri. Danuri entered the Moon’s orbit on December 27 after a journey of about 145 days. This spacecraft started its operations on 4 February.

Danuri is going to collect many more information on the moon. By the end of this year, the lunar regions, magnetic power, gamma rays etc. will be studied through the instruments fitted in it. Not only this, this orbiter will also identify the areas where Moon missions can be landed in future.

America is the most prominent among the countries sending missions to the Moon. After the success of Artemis 1 mission last year, it is preparing for Artemis II mission. The target is to launch this mission in the year 2024. NASA is also going to send 4 astronauts to orbit the moon in its mission.
