‘Bulli Bai’ controversy: Delhi Police asks Twitter for details of initial poster

Delhi Police has sought information from Twitter about the user who made the initial tweet about the ‘Bulli Bai’ app. Sources with knowledge of the matter had told on Monday that along with this, Twitter has been asked to remove the objectionable content related to the controversy.

The police have also sought information from the GitHub platform about the developer of the ‘Bulli Bai’ app. The case registered under section 509 of IPC at Cyber โ€‹โ€‹Police Station in South-East District has now been transferred to Delhi Police Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) Unit. Delhi Police has acted on a complaint lodged by a woman journalist at the Cyber โ€‹โ€‹Police Station. The woman journalist had alleged that her photo was uploaded on a website and she was being targeted through it. The complainant had demanded immediate registration of FIR and investigation. The complaint has been filed against unknown persons who are trying to harass Muslim women on social media and internet.

Mumbai Police has also registered an FIR against unknown people after receiving some complaints. In these complaints, it was said that the photographs of women have been tampered with and uploaded for auction on the ‘Bulli Bai’ app. to this app GitHub Platform hosts. The West Mumbai Cyber โ€‹โ€‹Police Station on Sunday registered a case against the developers of the app and the Twitter handles promoting the app.

Sections under IPC and Information Technology Act have been imposed in this case. Some opposition parties and organizations, including Shiv Sena, have also protested against this app. In the past, there have been some such cases in which attempts were made to harass through such apps. However, in such cases, sometimes the police find it difficult to take action against the accused due to the app being run from abroad. Action has been taken by the Central Government in the past on many websites and apps posting objectionable content.
