Slovenia Registered Over 277,000 Tourists in January Alone

Slovenia welcomed a total of 277,025 tourists in January this year, accounting for a 48.5 year-on-year increase.

The figures reveal that Sloveniaโ€™s tourism sector continues to improve, despite the devastating situation caused by COVID-19-related restrictions, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The figures provided by Trading Economic reveal that the number of domestic tourists was also higher in the first month of this year reaching 100,099 visitors, or an 8.2 per cent year-on-year increase.

As for international visitors, in January 2023, the figures climbed 88.1 per cent to a total of 176,926.

The majority of visitors who travelled to Slovenia last month came from the following countries:

  • Croatia (56 per cent)
  • Italy (240.9 per cent)
  • Serbia (110.1 per cent)
  • Austria (93.4 per cent)
  • Hungary (22.7 per cent)

It was reported that overnight stays number went up by a total of 38.2 per cent in comparison to the figures of the same month in the previous year to 780, 694 registered in January this year.

โ€œThe highest number of tourist overnight stays was recorded in spa resorts (51.8 per cent), followed by seaside resorts (33.2 per cent) and mountain resorts (17 per cent),โ€ the statement reads.

The Statistical Office of Slovenia previously announced that Slovenia welcomed a total of 4.9 million tourists for a period from January until September last year, thus accounting for an increase of 64.2 per cent compared to the figures for the same period in 2021.

The same source revealed that the numbers of domestic tourists also surged while stressing that they made up nearly 1.6 million arrivals.

At the same time, it was reported that the majority of foreign citizens who visited Slovenia from January until September last year were citizens from:

  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Austria
  • Netherlands

The data revealed that more than 13.2 million tourists spend nights in establishments in Slovenia, in the first nine months of last year, accounting for about a 54 per cent increase.

Slovenia saw also a significant decline in the number of tourists during the spread of the Coronavirus, as a result of strict restrictions imposed to protect the citizensโ€™ lives and prevent its further spread.

However, following the significant improvement of the epidemiological situation in terms of COVID-19 the travel and tourism sector in Slovenia has started to improve notably.

The figures provided by the Statistical Office of Slovenia revealed that the municipalities of Piran, Bled, Ljubljana, as well as Bohinj received 795,000 tourists in June last year alone, thus accounting for a successful start of the peak summer season.
