A few words about the Sklavenitis supermarket chain

Sklavenitis is a Greek-owned supermarket chain, operating mainly in Greece. As of March 1, 2017, the company is the largest retail group in Greece (having 497 stores in Greece and Cyprus), after the acquisition of the largest supermarket group in Greece, the Marinopoulos Group, followed by the Greek Masoutis and Alfa-Beta Vassilopoulos (of Ahold Delhaize Group).

The company was founded in 1954 by Yiannis Sklavenitis (1924-1993), Spyros Sklavenitis (1927-2006) and Miltiadis Papadopoulos (1920-1999), with initial activity in wholesale. In 1967 “I. SKLAVENITIS & SIA OE” was founded, with the distinctive title TELEXYP, which is the first telephone service company in Greece. The first supermarket opens in 1969 in Peristeri, Athens and in 1975 the younger brother of Spyros and Giannis, Nasos Sklavenitis, joins the business. In 1975 the company escapes from the narrow limits of Peristeri, opening a large store in Piraeus, in the Kaminia district. This step is big and requires corresponding funds, which is why shipowner Andreas Potamianos will have a 49% stake in the business structure being created (HELLINIKAI HYPERAGORAI SKLAVENITIS S.A.E.).

In November 2014, the company acquires 100% of the shares of Makro Cash & Carry Hellas, which operated 9 wholesale stores (2 in Athens, 2 in Thessaloniki and 1 each in Volos, Heraklion, Larissa, Xanthi and Patras), employing 1,073 employees. The chain after its acquisition is renamed The Mart. In December of the same year, the company enters the Crete market, acquiring from Veropoulos 60% of all the shares of the Chalkiadakis chain, which had 38 stores (27 in the Prefecture of Heraklion, 7 in the Prefecture of Lasithi, 3 in the Prefecture of Chania and 1 in the Prefecture of Rethymno), employing 940 workers.

On September 3, 2016 and after many months of negotiations and discussions, the acquisition of the Marinopoulos Group by the SKLAVENITIS Group is announced. The acquisition was approved by a court decision on January 16, 2017 and by the Competition Commission on the 26th of the same month. Until then, Marinopoulos Group was the largest retail supermarket group in Greece.

In January 2018, SKLAVENITIS Group proceeds with the sale of 21% of The Mart Cash and Carry company, with the buyer being the Managing Director of The Mart Cash and Carry, Mr. Leonidas Theokletos. In April 2021, it acquired 9 of the 11 stores in Ioannina of SEP Papadopoulos, at the end of 2022 it acquired 4 stores of the Athenian Gegos (former member of ELOMAS) where from the beginning of 2023 they operate under the joint name Gegos-Sklavenitis (Gegos sold the other 2 stores in Masoutis) and in the Spring of 2023 it acquired all the stores of the Thessalian AS Agora (former member of ELOMAS) in Larissa and Pieria
