The European Commission announced the DiscoverEU spring call, which will be operating from March 15 until March 29 and will enable thousands of people to visit Europe by train.

According to a press release, 35,000 young people will receive a travel pass to visit Europe and enjoy a pleasant experience, with all 18-year-olds from the EU Member States, as well as some third countries being eligible to apply, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Those willing to try this opportunity out, have to apply on the European Youth Portal, where they will have to answer a five-question-form as well as a tiebreaker question.

More specifically, applicants born between July 1, 2004, and June 30, 2005, and who have been selected for the travel pass will be able to visit Europe for 30 days between June 15, 2023, and September 30, 2024.

Those turning 18 during the second half of the year will be able to apply in the next round, which will be launched in October 2023.

In addition to the Member States, nationals of countries that are part of the Erasmus+ programme, such as Iceland, North Macedonia, Liechtenstein, Norway, Türkiye, and Serbia, will be eligible to apply for the travel pass.

“We are glad to make available, for 2023, a total of 70,000 travel passes to 18-year-old people who will be able to experience our Union first-hand,” Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth Mariya Gabriel said.

Similarly to the last round, beneficiaries will continue taking advantage of a discount card with more than 40,000 discount possibilities on public transport, as well as the culture, accommodation, and food, in addition to other services available in all EU Member countries.

Participants will also be able to join DiscoverEU Meet-ups with ongoing cultural programmes that last between one and three days across all Erasmus+ countries.

Moreover, there are many partner countries of EU Member States, such as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Montenegro, for the Western Balkans, in addition to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.

As per South-Mediterranean countries, Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, and Tunisia are all partner countries, in addition to Russia.

Last year, the EU Commission offered another 10,000 additional rail passes to people aged between 18 and 20 years old from various countries. In an effort to make a just selection of the participants, the Commission explained that every country has a number of travel passes allocated based on the population of that country compared to the whole population of the EU.
