1. What challenges did you face as a woman to establish a homegrown brand?

Vinita Singh – Starting a business can be as exciting as it is stressful, regardless of gender. What I find to be the biggest challenge is facing all the new businesses. However, in spite of this we completed it with great courage. SUGAR Cosmetics started with very little funding. So, it was really difficult to manage.

2. Have you ever faced gender discrimination during your journey?

Vinita Singh – At the beginning of our journey, like any other entrepreneur, we were looking for funds. It was very difficult to collect funds till 2018-19. However, things have changed a lot in the last 15 years. Now, people are more aware of how women can be role models and entrepreneurs.

Women are now taking their companies public. They are building companies that are valued at over a billion dollars. Therefore, the notion that women are not capable of doing anything, which has been around for years, has now come to an end. Although, at a slow pace, we are definitely moving forward.

3. Do you often face loneliness as a businesswoman?

Vinita Singh – Being a businesswoman has its advantages and disadvantages. The ongoing mind war between the need to work long hours and the need to spend time with family or friends can leave you emotionally exhausted. At the same time, when the outcome is not satisfactory, then somewhere the creativity starts decreasing.

Also, you can get discouraged a lot. However, I can guarantee that the support and presence of family on a bad day gives the courage to stand back even in the worst of situations. At the same time, I also want to tell everyone that while doing something new, one should not lose his true identity.

4. How do you strike a balance between your personal and professional life?

Vineeta Singh – One of the best ways to strike a balance would be to organize your day and make a better plan to make the post-work hours more productive, so that you can utilize the remaining time of the day as you wish. At the same time, it is also very important to take out ‘me-time’ during the day. I use my me-time for morning runs and workouts. At the end of the day, try to spend time with your loved ones as much as possible.

5. What motivates you to pursue fitness despite your busy schedule?

Vinita Singh – Fitness has taught me some of the most important lessons of my life, including the importance of hard work and resilience. Beating lethargy and keeping oneself active throughout the day is not possible without participating in physical activities. The day I exercise, I am able to give my best. It also brings out my competitive nature, which has helped me better myself over the years. I do workout for at least an hour everyday. This ‘me-time’ helps reduce my mental stress and increase my productivity.

6. Women are making headway in business! What is your opinion on this?

Vinita Singh – I find business more impactful because it employs so many women! At SUGAR, I am blessed and grateful to work with all the inspiring women. More important than a person’s gender are their character, traits and temperament. Also, how they work in a team and what they provide to the company is more important.

However, I think the most important factor is undoubtedly drive and determination. No matter what obstacles you face, a truly successful businesswoman always finds a way to overcome them and achieve her goals. It makes them stand out from the crowd and takes them closer to success.

7. What is your message to women who aspire to have a successful business while managing everything?

Vinita Singh – My first piece of advice for working women in general is that don’t forget to forget about self care along with work. Today’s women are more empowered, they can fulfill their dreams on their own. On the other hand, women play multiple roles and it can be mentally overwhelming for them at times.

From taking care of the house to taking care of children and business operations, a woman is seen in many roles. At the same time, she fulfills all her responsibilities efficiently. In this way, breaking all the shackles, they go ahead. So, I have a message for women aspiring to start a business, never give up on your dreams. Have faith in yourself and your abilities, and increase your ability to bear the difficulties along the way and look forward to the beautiful destination.
