Sambhal / Lucknow. The death toll rose to ten on Friday after the roof of a private cold storage chamber collapsed in Chandausi police station area of Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district. Zonal Deputy Inspector General of Police Shalabh Mathur gave this information. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a compensation of Rs two lakh to the next of kin of each person killed in the accident.

He has also constituted a committee to probe the reasons behind the incident. District Magistrate Manish Bansal said, “The roof of a private cold storage chamber located on Islam Nagar road in May village of Chandausi police station area suddenly collapsed on Thursday. So far ten people have died in this incident.

In Lucknow, a government spokesman said that Chief Minister Yogi has given instructions to give Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased, while Rs 50,000 to the seriously injured. He has also asked to provide free treatment to those injured in the accident. The spokesperson said that the Chief Minister has also constituted an inquiry committee headed by the Commissioner and DIG (Deputy Inspector General of Police), Moradabad, to investigate the cause of the cold storage collapse and submit the report at the earliest.
District Magistrate Bansal said that concrete and other construction materials have been removed from the debris and now the work of removing potato sacks is being done. Superintendent of Police Chakresh Mishra said that some other victims of the accident are also feared to be buried under the debris. He said that relief and rescue work is still going on in the cold storage. Regional Deputy Inspector General of Police Shalabh Mathur said that so far 21 people have been evacuated from the cold storage, out of which ten have died and the rest have been admitted to the hospital.
Sambhal District Magistrate Bansal said that five injured are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Moradabad, while six other injured have been discharged after medical treatment. Mathur told reporters late on Thursday, “Many people may still be trapped under the debris. A lot of precaution is being taken in relief and rescue work due to ammonia gas cylinders being kept in the cold storage. The rescue operation is likely to continue till tomorrow morning.”
Mathur had told that a case has been registered against cold storage owners Ankur Aggarwal and Rohit Aggarwal on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He had said that Ankur and Rohit are absconding since the incident and a team of Special Operation Group has been set up to arrest them. Mathur had said that as per the administrative procedure, the matter would be probed by a magistrate.
He told, “The part of the cold storage that has collapsed was built three months ago, but permission was not taken from the administration for it. Besides, potatoes were kept in excess of the capacity in the cold storage.” According to police, teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police are engaged in relief and rescue operations.
