PM Modi said that in view of the sentiments of the people, the award is now being named after Major Dhyan Chand. PM Modi said, “In those moments which have made the country proud, the request of many countrymen has come to light that the Khel Ratna award should be dedicated to Major Dhyan Chand ji. In view of the sentiments of the people, it is now being named as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. Jai Hind. ”

In another tweet, PM Modi said, “We are impressed by the great efforts of Indian athletes in all the Olympic Games. Especially the willpower shown by our sons and daughters in hockey. The enthusiasm shown for victory is a great inspiration for present and future generations. ”

The award was launched in 1991-92. It was then named after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The main purpose of establishing this award is to spread appreciation and awareness in the field of sports.
