After taking over Team India for two years, once again Rahul Dravid will be at the forefront in the future as well. After the defeat in the final of the World Cup 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the extension of Dravid's tenure. However, the board has not yet announced how long he will continue to be the coach. Some reports claim that he has been asked to stay with the team till T20 World Cup 2024. However, now BCCI Secretary Jai Shah has made a big statement in this matter.

Ever since he was made the coach of Team India two years ago, there has been constant speculation about Rahul Dravid. The kind of performance of Team India in the World Cup gave hope that after winning the title, Dravid would want to stay with the team in the future. Team India missed out on the title and then Dravid's tenure came under discussion.

A decision will be taken next month

The Indian board had announced the extension of Dravid's term on November 29. Just 10 days later, the board has officially said something on Dravid's tenure for the first time. Jai Shah was asked questions about this during a media interaction during the auction of the second season of the Women's Premier League in Mumbai on Saturday, December 9. Meanwhile, Shah said that the extension has been given but the contract has not been finalized yet.

Shah also said that he did not get much time for this after the World Cup ended. He said that after discussions with Dravid, the board mutually decided to take this partnership forward. The BCCI secretary said that the tenure of the coaching staff will be discussed and a final decision taken only after Team India returns from the South Africa tour.

Will the coach remain even after coming from South Africa?

The decision to extend Dravid's tenure was taken considering that the synergy between him and the current team has been very good in the last two years. Then, since the T20 World Cup was only 6 months away, it was a better option for him to stick with the team. Obviously, the board would like to keep it at least until then, but Jay Shah's statement also suggests that the decision could be changed if the team's performance in South Africa does not go well. It was during Dravid's tenure that Team India lost the Test series after taking the lead on the tour of South Africa in 2021, while being swept 0–3 in the ODI series.
