Hailing from the Ravidassia community of British Sikhs, Chamanlal was born in Pakhowal village in Hoshiarpur before moving to Britain. where he served as a local councilor for many years. As a Labor Party politician, he was first elected as a councilor in 1994. He was re-elected as a councilor for the Soho and Jewelery Quarter wards in the most recent local elections.
In his speech at an event last week, Chaman Lal said – As the son of an Indian-born army officer, being elected Lord Mayor is an honor for me and our family. I was adopted by this city and never thought that one day I would become the Lord Mayor of this city.
The family moved to Britain in 1954
Chaman Lal’s father Sardar Harnam Singh Banga was an officer in the British Indian Army. He served in the Italian campaign during World War II. Chamanlal’s father came to England in 1954 and worked in British Steel for many years and settled in Birmingham after his employment.
Chamanlal moved to England in 1964 with his mother Sardarni Jai Kaur to live with his father. Since then he has lived in Birmingham.
Joined the Labor Party in 1989
His interest in politics began in 1989, when he joined the Labor Party. Participated in several social justice campaigns to challenge inequality and discrimination.
He has served on most local council committees over the past 29 years, including as Cabinet Advisor for Major Transport Projects and most recently as Chair of the Sustainability and Transport Oversight Scrutiny Committee.
