Chandigarh: 4 daughters of Punjab who were stuck in Iraq and other Arab countries for 3 months returned to their homeland yesterday. Thanks to the efforts of Rajya Sabha member and environmentalist Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, four girls trapped in Arab countries were brought back.

Balbir Singh Seechewal said that three girls have been brought back from Iraq and one girl from Muscat. Three of these girls are from Jalandhar and one from Kapurthala. The travel agents and especially the relatives of the victims are trapping them. He said that the agents are targeting girls from the poor class. Sant Seechewal thanked the Indian embassies in Iraq and Muscat and said that they have played a big role in the early identification and return of these girls.

All the three girls said that they went to Iraq in May, June and July. As soon as they reached Iraq, their passports were confiscated. They were not given food for several days and were beaten. These girls said that they had left home with the dream of removing the poverty of their home. But on reaching there, their dreams were shattered when they found out that they were sold there by travel agents. The girls said that where they were physically abused, there was also an attempt to push them to do wrong things.

The girl who returned from Muscat said that she was also trapped there by the travel agent. As soon as he reached there, his health deteriorated, but still the agent forced him to work in the houses. During this, other girls also narrated their torture and by sharing their sad story, a message was also given to the young generation.

The victim girls reached Nirmal Kutia and thanked Sant Seechewal and said that if the Indian Embassy had not helped us, it would have been impossible to get out of the hellish life.

Rajya Sabha member Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal said that the families of the girls’ victims had approached them a few days ago. He had told that his girls are stuck in Arab countries, for which money is being demanded from them by the travel agent to leave them. Immediately after this, the matter was brought to the attention of the Ministry of External Affairs through a letter, on which immediate action was taken by the Indian Embassy there and the Ministry of External Affairs. These girls have returned to their home in about 20 days. He again appealed to the people of Punjab that the exploitation of cheated women at the hands of travel agents continues in Arab countries. Before sending their girls out, they must have thoroughly investigated the agents and the conditions there so that the girls do not become victims.
