Punjab Universityโ€™s decision to remove Punjabi: The Shiromani Akali Dal appealed to the Punjab University to immediately withdraw its decision to remove Punjabi as a compulsory subject up to graduation level in all its affiliated colleges and warned the university that it would never discriminate against Punjabi as its mother tongue. will not tolerate

Senior leader of Shiromani Akali Dal Dr. Daljit Singh Cheema also took a strong stand against the Syndicate which decided to remove Punjabi as a subject up to graduation level and restrict it only to qualifying classes. He said that the syndicate members who supported this decision have no right to be members of this body of the university. He asked the Vice Chancellor to withdraw this decision immediately.

The Akali leader appealed to the staff and students of Punjab University to convince the administration to withdraw this anti-Punjabi decision and insisted that if this was not done, the Akali Dal asked the university to respect the sentiments of Punjabis and Will take every step necessary to persuade you to correct the error.

Dr. Cheema wondered how the university could take this decision. He said that Punjab University is a part of the capital of the state and this capital was built by devastation of the villages of Punjab. He said that more than 200 colleges of Punjab are affiliated with this university. He said that the university cannot discriminate against the mother tongue of the region. He said that it cannot be expected to go to other states or countries to master their mother tongue.

Akali leader Dr. Cheema also explained how spreading the language and culture of the region is one of the founding ideals of Punjabi University and this institution should not run away from it. He also said that after the reorganization of Punjab, the colleges of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh were de-affiliated with Punjab University. He said that the colleges of Punjab are still recognized by the university and the Punjab government gives its due share of grant to the university. He said that the university cannot run away from the service of its people and the state in any way.

Declaring all these decisions as part of the conspiracy to weaken Punjab’s claim on Chandigarh, Dr. Cheema said that one after another anti-Punjab and anti-Punjabi decision is being taken in the Union Territory. He said that the decision of the university has come after a few days ago All India Radio stopped the Punjabi news bulletin in Chandigarh and the staff making this bulletin has been shifted to Jalandhar. He also told how Punjab’s authority over Chandigarh is being undermined by denying government work in Punjabi and Punjabi language is also being removed from the city’s signboards.
