The operation was carried out on the instructions of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav, under which searches were conducted in 25 jails of the state – central, district and sub-divisional jails.
Special DGP Law and Order Arpit Shukla himself led this state level operation along with ADGP Prisons Arun Pal Singh and reached Central Jail Patiala for checking. Inspector General of Police (IGP), Patiala Range, Mukhwinder Singh Chhina and SSP Patiala Varun Sharma were also present on this occasion.
The operation, which involved a strong force of over 2500 police personnel, was conducted simultaneously across the state from 12 noon to 3 pm and SSPs were asked to lead the operation in their respective districts. was Meanwhile, heavy police deployment was made inside and outside the jails so that no one could throw anything out of the jail. Sniffer dogs were also included in the campaign.
Special DGP Arpit Shukla said that the purpose of this operation is not only to prevent illegal activities in the jail but also to ensure that the inmates get all the facilities they are entitled to under the law. “Our police teams conducted a thorough search of the jail premises including barracks, kitchens and toilets in the jail complex,” he said.
Sharing information about the results of the operation, he said that during this state-level search operation, 21 mobile phones including SIM cards and chargers, modified knives, nails and 8.7 grams of opium were recovered from the barracks of different jails.
It may be mentioned that the Special DGP expressed satisfaction over the adequate security arrangements made in the Patiala Central Jail.
