Punjab Police major action against distributors/agents selling SIM cards on fake documents, 52 FIRs registered, 17 arrested

Punjab DGP Gorav Yadav: To curb the trend of issuing SIM cards based on forged documents, which has become a major security threat, the Punjab Police has allegedly issued more than 1.8 lakh SIM cards using fake identity/fake documents. has been blocked. This information was given by Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab Gaurav Yadav.

It may be noted that internal security wing of Punjab Police in collaboration with Department of Telecommunications (DOT) has initiated strict action against distributors/agents selling SIM cards based on fake identity proofs as most of the cyber crimes and anti-national activities are fake. Done on documents or through mobile numbers issued using third party names.

DGP Gaurav Yadav said that strict action is also being taken against Point of Sales (POS) distributors/agents and other persons selling SIM cards on the basis of fake evidence. He further said that the police teams have arrested 17 such persons involved in the sale of SIM cards on fake documents. Apart from this, 52 FIRs have been registered under sections 420, 465, 467 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code during the last three days across the state.

Giving details, Special DGP Internal Security R. N. Dhoke said that he held several meetings with the Department of Telecommunication and the telecommunication service providers, after which this action was initiated. He said that in this regard Inspector General of Police (IGP) Counter Intelligence Rakesh Agarwal has been made the nodal officer and the campaign is on to identify SIM cards issued through fake documents. He said that in one case around 500 SIM cards have been issued by changing names with the same photo using fake documents.

The Special DGP also warned of strict action against retailers across Punjab for non-compliance with Know Your Customer (KYC) norms. He added that special teams of the Counter Intelligence Wing are coordinating with the district police to identify those SIM card retailers who have issued different mobile phone numbers with the same proof of identity.

He further said that he will raise the issue with the telecom authorities to blacklist such agents. It is to be noted that the real user of these SIM cards issued by the police through fake identity proofs is being investigated.
