The official statistical office of Portugal, Statistics Portugal, has revealed that a total of 3.9 million passengers were registered at Portuguese national airports in January of this year, marking an increase of 84 per cent compared to the same month last year.
The same has shown that compared to January 2020, the movement of passengers increased by 5.7 per cent during January of 2023, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
According to Statistics Portugal, during the first month of this year, a daily average of 60.7 thousand passengers disembarked at the country’s airports. This represents a significantly higher number than the one recorded in January last year (31,900 passengers or +89.9 per cent) and a 5.4 per cent increase compared to January 2020 (57,600 passengers).
The same source noted that in January of this year, 16,700 tons of goods and mail were also handled at Portuguese national airports, representing a decrease of -0.4 per cent compared to January 2022. At the same time, the postal goods movement also saw a decrease of 3.2 per cent compared to January 2020.
As Portuguese Statistics points out, the main country of origin and destination of flights was France, followed by Spain and the United Kingdom, which recorded the highest increases compared to January 2022.
Moreover, Portuguese airports saw a positive increase in passengers in the first half of 2022 as well. The data provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) have revealed that during this period, the Portuguese airports welcomed a total of 24.3 million passengers, which is an increase of 344 per cent compared to the figures for the same period last year.
Further INE figures also show that the number of travellers in the first half of 2022 was still below pre-pandemic levels, with a total of 12.8 per cent.
At the same time, Lisbon airport handled a total of 12.1 million passengers or 49.8 per cent of the total, marking an increase of 380.9 per cent compared to the same period in 2021, while compared to the same period in 2021, the figures was still down by 17.0 per cent.
According to INE, in the first half of 2022, Porto airport also handled a total of 5.52 million passengers, an increase of 335.0 per cent, while Faro had the most significant increase, with 503.2 per cent to 3.46 million passengers.
Recently, INE statistics have also revealed that Portugal’s national tourist accommodation establishments welcomed a total of 1.5 million passengers and 3.5 million overnight stays in January 2023. The data show that during this period, there was an increase of 74.5 per cent compared to the same month in 2022.
