Last year, Portugal’s tourism sector had a positive return with income from tourist accommodation reaching five billion euros.
The Portuguese authorities say that compared to 2021, this shows an increase of 114.7 per cent and a 16.5 per cent increase compared to 2019, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), in 2022 tourist accommodation units in Portugal recorded 26.5 million visitors and 69.5 million overnight stays, representing an increase of 83.3 per cent and 86.3 per cent respectively compared to 2021.
As for camping sites and youth hostels, the figures are even higher with 28.9 million guests and 77 million overnight stays.
In addition, the majority of guests in tourist accommodation during 2022 consisted of foreigners with over 15 million slightly more than 11 million Portuguese vacationers, although in December the domestic market represented the majority of guests.
The data provided by the National Statistics Institute also reveals that the average stay of foreign tourists was longer by about three days, while that of Portuguese citizens was by two days.
As for the month of December, Portugal received 1.6 million guests with 3.7 million overnight stays, which is an increase of 44.2 per cent and 44.6 per cent respectively compared to 2021 and 1.9 per cent and 5.5 per cent compared to 2019.
Highest Number of Nights Spent Recorded in the Algarve
The main tourist destination in Portugal that recorded the most nights with about 19.1 million during 2022 was the Algarve. Second place was taken by the Metropolitan area of Lisbon with 17.1 million, while the North region ranked third with 11.5 million.
The increase in overnight stays was noticed in almost every region of Portugal, especially in the Metropolitan area of Lisbon with +132.6 per cent compared to 2021.
In this regard, INE also emphasised that arrivals from foreigners more than doubled in every region, even though overnight stays by national tourists fell by 4.5 per cent in the Algarve.
Further data from INE also show that from December of last year an improvement was seen in terms of total income in tourist accommodation that reached €252 million, with an increase of 22.9 per cent compared to 2019.
INE’s forecasts that this year will also have a great start in the Algarve, as the latter has just celebrated its best January in 20 years.
President of Turismo de Portugal Luís Araújo also added that Portugal is expected to reach the levels of 2022 this year even though there are many uncertainties from the war in Ukraine to inflation.
