Portugal has granted a total of 58,043 temporary protections to citizens of Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the figures provided by the Foreign and Border Service (SEF) have revealed.

Of the total, 33,900 temporary protections were granted to women and 24,143 to men, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

According to SEF, the most significant number of protections granted during a year were registered in the municipalities of Lisbon (12,385), Cascais (3,665), Porto (2,976), Sintra (1,955) as well as Albufeira (1,443).

Authorities in Portugal granted temporary protection to a total of 14,111 minors, accounting for nearly 25 per cent of the total.

SEF said that it reported to the Office of the Public Prosecutor the situation of a total of 737 minors from Ukraine who reached Portugal without their parents or representatives, cases in which according to SEF it is considered to be no imminent or current danger.

According to Lusa, security services established that a total of 47,377 certificates had been issued for residence permits under the temporary protection program, a document which consists of the user numbers of the National Health Service, as well as social security and tax identification needed for refugees who begin working and access support.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine led authorities in European countries to work together and open their doors and help refugees from Ukraine. Authorities in Portugal also have offered shelter to a large number of Ukrainians, while the number of refugees continues to increase.

The figures provided by SEF revealed that from February 24, until September last year, Portugal’s authorities granted temporary protection to 51,716 nationals from Ukraine.

SEF said that in addition to temporary protection permits, the Public Prosecutor’s Office accommodated about 728 children who reached the country unaccompanied.

Of the total 51,716 temporary protection permits, 30,792 or 59.5 per cent were women and 20,924 men or 40.4 per cent.

The highest number of temporary protection permits were granted in the following territories:

  • Lisbon (11,121)
  • Cascais (3,106)
  • Porto (2,519)
  • Sintra (1,778)
  • Albufeira (1,284)

A total of 42,347 certificates granting a residence permit under the temporary protection scheme were issued by the country’s authorities.

It was reported that applicants can make requests for such a scheme offered in Portugal through the online platform dedicated to the issue while minors are required to visit SEF’s offices.

Last year, the European Agency for Border and Coast Guard, Frontex, said that the number of Ukrainians crossing the border to the EU is increasing, but continues to remain stable.
