Taking a tough stance on illegal mining in Ropar, the High Court has reprimanded the Punjab Police for arresting only poor people and keeping the mining mafia out of the clutches of the police. The court said that it seems that the Punjab Police is not serious in this matter. Why was the investigation of these 14 FIRs related to illegal mining not handed over to the CBI?
An FIR regarding illegal mining was registered in Ropar’s Nangal police station on July 27. In this case, accused Azamdeen had filed a petition and demanded anticipatory bail. Before the bench, the petitioner’s lawyer had argued that he has no role in this matter. He is only a tipper driver and was not even arrested on the spot. The bench said that only JCB and tipper drivers are made guilty, it is a sorry state of affairs. The police are trying their best to rescue the real culprits, on whose instructions the illegal mining was going on.
The High Court had ordered the local SHO to appear at the previous hearing. He appeared on Thursday and gave a status report. Questioning the workings of the Punjab Police during the hearing, the court said that it appears that the police are working in connivance with the mining mafia. Only the poor are targeted and the mining mafia is far from the grip of the police.
The court said that the police investigation was delayed due to non-receipt of the delimitation report from the tehsildar on time. Illegal mining continues due to lack of proper supervision by the mining department officials and the SSP did not pay attention to the matter. The High Court has summoned SSP, Nangal Tehsildar, Mining and Drainage Department Axion. Also warned that if all the three do not appear, then non-bailable warrants will be issued against them.
