The Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee has become stricter on the main health institute Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. If PGI does not install sewage treatment plant and effluent treatment plant within the stipulated time, then it may have to pay environmental damages. PGI has been accused of violating the rules of the National Green Tribunal. These are associated with notorious wastewater discharges. According to information, PGI is spreading the most pollution in the city. It is releasing about 3.5 MGD of liquefied waste into the sewerage system of the corporation.

PGI also has to comply with the Water Act 1974 as it falls under the industrial category. A large number of patients from north-eastern states come for treatment at PGI. The investigation found that PGI has been releasing untreated wastewater into the sewerage system of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation for many years. Regarding this, the committee asked the PGI to respond by issuing a show cause notice about 6 months ago.

The committee again issued a show cause notice after the PGI did not submit a response in the matter but still no response was received. After this, the committee placed the matter before UT Advisor Dharmapal, after which a meeting was held with senior officials of PGI.
