More than 2,776 illegal migrants were detected at the Italian-Switzerland Ticino border, in the first month of this year, according to Swiss border guards.

Based on a report provided by NZZ News, the border guards are patrolling the trains between the Italian border town of Como as well as the Swiss train station in Chiasso, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

The same notes that in 2022 the number of migrants detected at this border crossing point was even higher.

Authorities in Switzerland registered about 52,000 irregular entries last year, or about three times as many as those recorded in 2021, while the majority of them were citizens of Afghanistan and Morocco.

According to the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG), the numbers registered increased from 18,859 registered in 2021 to a total of 52,077 last year.

The surge in the number of illegal border crossings for a period from December 2021 until December 2022, according to the office, is the result of the irregular entry of migrants into this country through the eastern border and the southern border.

The figures revealed that in the first pandemic year, the number of people who reached Switzerland in an unlawful way was 11,043.ย  In addition, BAZG figures revealed the number of people smuggling last year stood at 476.

Local media reports in Switzerland announced that of about 6,000 illegal migrants detected at the countryโ€™s borders, about 852 of them came from Italy, while according to a Tagblatt report, Italy took back 571 people in November last year.

At present, a large number of European countries are dealing with an influx of migrants who attempt to reach EU countries in an unlawful way.

Last year, Swiss officials were accused of helping a large number of migrants to reach European Union countries. Besides, some said that Switzerlandโ€™s authorities are continuously assisting migrants on their way into Northern Europe.

It was reported that migrants reaching Switzerland from Austria were permitted to use this country as a transit one in order to reach France and Germany. According to the Swiss TV show Rundschau, in some cases, persons entering Switzerland in illicit ways were even encouraged and also supported in their journeys.

Switzerland is often considered a transit country for the majority of migrants reaching this territory and not a destination. According to the InfoMigrants report, about 100 people arrive in this country per day hoping to reach other European countries. These figures are three times higher compared to those registered in 2021.
