The Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) has criticised eight Spanish airlines โ Air Europa, Iberia, Iberia Express, Volotea, Plus Ultra, World2fly, and Wamos Air โ for not accepting cash payments on board.
OCU has required that all the eight airlines mentioned above drop their card-only payment policy and start accepting cash on their flights, and the same has reported the companies for ignoring their request, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
โThese airlines continue to force consumers who make purchases on board to pay by card: this is a clear violation of consumer regulations. For this reason, we have reported the eight companies that continue to ignore our requests,โ the statement of OCU reads.
According to OCU, the current regulations establish that cash payments can not be refused on board. Moreover, OCU stressed that there are no reasons that could justify the use of cash limitation.
The same pointed out that such a policy makes passengers uncomfortable, especially those who only have cash on them.
โThis is abusive and represents a serious breach of consumer protection regulations,โ OCU stressed.
Canarian Weekly explains that Spain made some changes to its General Law for the Defence of customers last year. Among many others, changes included the possibility of making cash payments in all establishments.
In line with the current law, airlines and other companies should not limit the form of payment and not accept cash.
Cash payments for onboard purchases are accepted on flights that are operated by EU airlines. Nonetheless, all passengers must keep in mind some important things when it comes to onboard cash payments.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some airlines decided to temporarily suspend cash payments to reduce contact between the passengers and the crew. Even though the Coronavirus situation now is under control and airlines have returned to their usual activity, it is advised that all those taking a flight check with their airline for their current policies on cash payments.
In addition, it is recommended that all passengers make sure to gather information about the currency accepted on their flight. Generally, flights within the EU accept euros. As for flights between the EU and non-EU countries, airlines may accept other currencies too.
Regarding cash payments, data shows that many airlines accept credit and debit card payments for onboard purchases. Those planning to make card payments are advised to check with the airline which types of cards are accepted and if there are any additional fees.
Some airlines also have the pre-order option. This can be done through the website or the app of airlines and requires a card payment.
