Number of Asylum Requests Was Stable in November, Yet High Compared to 2020

The European authorities received a similar number of first-time applications for international protection in November of 2022, compared to the previous month – a total of 99,200, down by 140 applications.

According to the European Office for Statistics, the number of subsequent applicants in November decreased by two per cent compared to October rates, reaching a total of 6,225, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Regardless, the data show that the number of applicants recorded in 2022 is considerably higher than in pre-pandemic levels. While a total of 99,200 first-time asylum applications were filed in November 2020, 7,990 of those were submitted to the authorities.

Moreover, the number of subsequent asylum applications stood at 10,000 in 2021, and it has remained stable since then.

Syrians and Afghans, represented the main applicants, followed by Turks, all filing the highest number of applications for temporary protection. In detail, Syrians lodged 17,705 first-time applications, followed by Afghans (13,065) and Turks with 7,495 requests.

The number of first-time asylum applicants also rose among nationals from Ukraine, following the Russian attack in Ukraine, increasing from 2,365 in February to 12,875 in the following month, but these numbers dropped again in November to a total of 1,060, with the main reason for this decrease being the temporary protection directive, from which a lot of Ukrainian nationals continue to benefit.

Additionally, the number of first-time applicants with Russian citizenship was ranked 12th among all citizenships, with a total of 2,520 applications.

The main recipient remained Germany, which reported the highest number of first-time asylum applications and altogether with France, Spain, Austria and Italy represented 78 per cent of all applications in the EU. In general, the number of first-time asylum applicants per million population was 222 in November.

Furthermore, the highest rate of registered first-time applications was recorded in Cyprus, with 2,111 applications per million population, followed by Austria (1,299), while the lowest was recorded in Hungary (0.1).

“In November 2022, 4,260 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum for the first time in the EU, -18 per cent compared with October 2022 (5,225). Most unaccompanied minors who lodged asylum applications in November 2022 came from Afghanistan (1,585) and Syria (1,335),” the press release by Eurostat explained.

Countries that received the highest number of unaccompanied minors were Germany, with a total of 1,125, followed by Austria (1,070), the Netherlands (515), Belgium (350) and Bulgaria (330). All these five countries saw the number of requests decrease except for Germany.
