From October 1, the requirement of birth certificate in document verification will increase. Under the new rules, the birth certificate can be used as a single document in many places including school admission, issuance of driving license, voter ID, marriage certificate, government employment, passport and Aadhaar.
The Birth and Death Certificate Amendment Bill, 2023 has been passed by both the Houses of Parliament during the Monsoon Session and has now also received the President’s assent. This rule will come into effect from October 1. During the monsoon session, the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs had said in the Lok Sabha that there is no need for anything other than the birth certificate.
The government said that the law has been amended to create harmony in social change and technology. After the new law, a birth certificate will be accepted to prove the age and place of birth of a person. This will eliminate the need for any other document to prove the date and place of birth. Only one document will suffice.
The entire process of birth and death certificate will be online
The biggest change with the amendment in the law will be that the entire process of birth and death certificate will be made online. Earlier only hard copy was available. He had to go round the offices for many days. In this bill, birth and death certificates will have to be registered on a central portal.
Can birth certificate be used like aadhar card?
Till now Aadhaar is used everywhere like an identity card. It needs to be linked to every other document and account. Similarly, there will be a birth certificate, which will work like an identity card everywhere for birth and death proof.
