A youth of Bholewal village of Nawanshahr has died due to drowning. The deceased has been identified as Vijay Kumar son of Surjit Lal, whose body was found on Tuesday when the water receded. The police of Pojewal police station have registered a case of illegal mining on the complaint of the deceased’s father.

Incessant rain since July 9 has wreaked havoc in the coastal region. Meanwhile, 18-year-old Vijay Kumar of Bholewal village of Block Sadoa had gone to graze goats near the Baba Ruri Wale temple, but he drowned due to slipping in the water, whose body has been recovered.

Surjeet Lal, father of the deceased Vijay Kumar, told the police that his son Vijay Kumar had gone to the fields to graze goats. Illegal mining was going on in the area for the past several days. Due to this, 20-25 feet deep pits were formed, which were filled with rain water. It was in these that Vijay fell.

The body of Vijay Kumar was handed over to the family members after post-mortem. In this case, Constituency MLA Santosh Kataria said that action has been taken against the person involved in illegal mining and the Punjab government has asked to give compensation to the family of the deceased. The police are also conducting their own investigation.
