NASA has shared a picture of Saturn’s moon Titan under ‘Astronomy Picture of the Day’. Six faces of Titan are shown in this picture. Saturn’s moon is special in many ways. As per reports, it is the second largest moon in our solar system and is bigger than Earth’s moon. The US space agency says that only Ganymede, the moon of Jupiter, is bigger than Saturn’s moon in our solar system.

In 2004, NASA sent the Cassini spacecraft towards Saturn. It orbited Saturn till 2017 and captured images of Titan during that time. It is said that the picture of Titan was captured with the help of Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) fitted in the spacecraft. There isn’t a lot of detail in the picture, but it gives a glimpse of what Titan will be like.

Because of Titan’s dense atmosphere and icy region, a very clear picture is not yet available. The Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) with the help of which the image of Titan was captured, had two cameras. One measured visible wavelengths, the other measured infrared. This helped scientists to study Titan’s atmosphere. The US space agency wants to further explore Titan. It is said that he has planned to launch the rotorcraft mission in the year 2027.
