Mustard seed kits distributed to promote crop diversification: Gurmeet Singh Khudian

To promote crop diversification in Punjab, 4500 mini-kits of mustard seeds have been distributed free of cost in four districts during the rabi season 2023-24 by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare of Punjab. The area under mustard crop is likely to increase to about 4000 hectares this year.

Sharing this information, Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare of Punjab. Gurmeet Singh Khudian said that the farmers of Bathinda, Fazilka, Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur districts have been made available free of charge 90 quintal seeds of mustard RH-761.

He said that the area under mustard crop this year is estimated to be around 49000 hectares, which was 45000 hectares in rhabi season 2022-23.

It may be mentioned that during this monsoon season in Punjab, the area under basmati has increased by about 20 percent. The area under basmati increased to 5.96 lakh hectares this time as compared to last season's 4.94 lakh hectares.

S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian said that under the National Food Security Mission, mustard seed kits have been distributed free of charge to encourage new high-yielding varieties of mustard among farmers.
