The Indian cricket team's star fast bowler Mohammad Shami will be conferred with the country's second highest sports honour, the Arjuna Award. The Union Sports Ministry announced the National Sports Awards on Wednesday, December 20, in which Mohammed Shami was nominated for the Arjuna Award. After his strong performance in the World Cup 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India made a special request and recommended Shami's name after the stipulated date, which was accepted by the Sports Ministry. The country's number one men's doubles badminton duo Satviksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will be conferred the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award. Khel Ratna is India's highest award.
The Sports Ministry has decided to award a total of 26 sportspersons with the Arjuna Award this year. Apart from Shami, blind cricketer Illuri Ajay Kumar Reddy will also be given the Arjuna Award. There are some sports including Kabaddi, Athletics, Archery, Wrestling, in which awards will be given to 2 players each. Apart from these, 5 coaches of different sports have been selected for the Dronacharya award. Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award will be given to three veterans. All the winners will be conferred the Draupadi Murmu Award by the President on 9th January 2024 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
A strong performance by Shami
This year has been very good for Shami. Especially in the World Cup, the Indian fast bowler created a stir. He had taken the maximum 24 wickets in only 7 matches, on the basis of which the team India was successful in reaching the final. Meanwhile, Shami took 5 wickets three times in one innings. He also became the highest Indian bowler in World Cup history with 55 wickets.
Satvik-Chirag created history
It was also a memorable year for India's number one pair Satvik-Chirag who won the sport's biggest honour. Satvik-Chirag, who has been consistently performing well on the court, won the gold medal in the Asian Games this year. This has also become the first Indian pair to achieve this feat. Apart from this, he also won the bronze medal for the first time in the world championship. He also achieved success in many other competitions. They also became the first Indian pair to reach the world No. 1 ranking.
